May 9, 2014 Pesky Woodpecker

We have a variety of woodpeckers in our neighborhood.  One of them keeps hacking away at a utility pole in George and Patsy’s yard.  With overcast skies and balanced lighting, I tried for an image of him.

The song for this page is“Cuts Like a Knife” by Bryan Adams (been into his early music as of late).  Hey, hey, hey, don’t worry…I’m cool…his early stuff ONLY (which was cool music)…if I start watching “Ellen”, then call the authorities…

MAY_9_2014__001ANikon D7100 with a Tamron SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD lens shot at F/5.6 and a 1/80 of a second shutter speed.  ISO 100.  Focal length: 300mm (APS-C).  IMAGE HEAVILY CROPPED.

So here he is.  This image is heavily cropped, as these birds are super-skittish.  I just can’t get anywhere near them without them bolting.  Knowing that, I grabbed my 24MP D7100 for this shoot (the image is cropped down to 5MP).  I also had to over-expose this by at least 2 stops because of the bright sky.  Had I not done that; he would be just a shadow.

He certainly isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer.  That’s treated wood he’s banging away at, and he hasn’t made much of a dent into it.  However, just like the ant and the rubber tree plant; if the power suddenly goes out, I’ll know he was successful…

Ok, just to reassure you that I haven’t gone “soft”, I added another song for this page;“Tell Me What You Want” by Zebra.  Have you ever heard of it?  I bet not.  Google it and listen.  A truly cool and rocking song from the early 1980’s…you’re welcome…I am here to help…
